of the Warden and Head Turnkey Hodge, in arming the Guard and utilizing the European Prisoners, the malcontents were overawed and marched off to their cells. I have expressed to the officers and European Prisoners my satisfaction at their conduct. As in my opinion it was desirable to act promptly and with vigour in the matter, I have, with the approval of the Colonial Surgeon, had corporal punishment inflicted on 54 of the mutineers this morning. In each case, twelve strokes were administered. The Gaol is now quiet.

Acting Superintendent,

Minute by His Excellency The Officer Administering the Government.

The Acting Superintendent appears to have acted with promptitude and decision, and no doubt this prevented the mutiny from taking serious form. I think that there ought to be a careful enquiry into the matter, as this will have to be reported home; and I shall be glad to speak to the Acting Attorney-General on the subject tomorrow morning if he is not engaged in Court.

(signed) W.H. Marsh,
31st January, 1887.
